Pharmacies who are enrolled in Medicare to sell durable medical equipment, ortho
tics, prosthetics, and supples (DMEPOS) have to go through accredidation. But, as of January 1, 2011, certain pharmacies may file for an accredidation exemption statement given that they meet all the requirements.
So What's the Benefit?
The benefit of being under the exemption is simply that you do not have to pay an AO to come in and survey you. You are still required to follow all of the Medicare guidelines.
Note: 20% of all exempt pharmacies are requested to submit financial and patient files to the NSC annually.
How Do I Know if My Pharmacy is Elegiable?
Checklist: What Needs to be Done
- Ensure your Medicare number has been active for five years
- Check that less than 5% of your overall sales are in DME
- Double check to make sure that none of your local insurances require accredidation
- Complete the Attestation for Exemption
Checklist: What You Need to Continuously Do
- Revalidate Medicare number every three years
- Follow all of Medicare's requirements
- Maintain Surety Bond
- Maintain Certificate of Liability with NSC as the certificate holder
